THERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN NEWCASTLE/GATESHEAD 2019
Another exciting year in store for Newcastle/Gateshead this year. From major sporting events The rugby European Cup Final in May at Gateshead stadium to first class shows held at the Theatre Royal, Sage, & the Metro Arena.
The Metro Arena now called Utilita Arena which opened in 1995 at a cost of 10.6 million has played host to the likes of Lady Gaga, Elton John, Justin Bieber, and 2019 is no exception. With Little Mix (Perrie & Jade) both born in the North East. There’s George Ezra, Rod Stewart, and for comedy Mrs Brown’s Boys the musical and Russell Howard.
For a slightly more intimate venue you can’t go past the O2 Academy highlighting Nicki Minaj, Ozzy Ozbourne and for the ladies a bit of eye candy in the form of Hugh Jackman in June OMG.
In my opinion the most impressive of them all is the imposing Sage. Opening in 2004 at a staggering cost of £70m it stands as a landmark live music venue on the south bank of the river Tyne. It houses two main stages of acoustic excellence as well as a 26-room music education centre, a music information resource centre, four bars, a brasserie and a café. The building itself is spectacular and is open every day free of charge. I had a wonderful time at Dirty Dancing in January and then there’s Thriller in June, brass bands, 10cc to Alfie Boe all lined up for the next few months.
How about Matthew Bourne’s all male cast of Swan Lake at the Theatre Royal and his production of Romeo and Juliet in October? If ballet isn’t your thing how about the Hairy Bikers, Annie or Wet Wet Wet? From The Dream Boys to the Bodyguard from Eddie Izzard to Rob Beckett there is literally something for everyone.
Don’t forget the Great North Run in September and as the year progresses and the seasons change I look forward to wandering the many bars and restaurants along the Quayside taking in the views of the iconic bridges, perhaps a little sit down on the quayside seaside and enjoying the friendly faces and banter of us Northerners!!!!
